About Madanapalle

Madanapalle is one of the smaller cities in Chittoor district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Not only is it a municipality and the headquarters of Madanapalle mandal it is also the major Madanapalle revenue division. As per the 2011 Census of India, the town had a population of 136,414 with 67,432 males, 68,237 females and 13,448 children. The average literacy rate stands at 81.40% which is higher than the rest of the country.

The municipality was formed on 1 April 1961 and covered 14.20 km2 (5.48 sq mi). The Madanapalle urban agglomeration currently spreads over an area of 23.44 km2 (9.05 sq mi). The constituents include the municipality of Madanapalle, the out growths of Ankisettipalle, Chippili, Pamaiahgaripalle, Papireddipalle, Venkappakota, partial out growths of Basinikonda, Kollabylu, Ponnetipalem and Madanapalle (rural). This is also an assembly constituency number 283.

History of Madanapalle


The town was earlier known as Maryaada Raamanna Puram. Madanapallehad been founded by Sri Ahobila Naidu in 1618 AD. Historically speaking, this town has a lot of significance especially in reference with the freedom fight. It was here in the courtyard of Madanapalle that Jana Gana Mana was first sung. Also a lot of other important historical events happened here. Sir Thomas Munro became the first collector of Cuddapah. A small thatched house was set up in the present collector’s bunglow. The collector visited the same each year during the summers. In the year 1850, Madanapalle was also developed and became the subdivision. The first subcollector here was F.B.Manoly.

Jana Gana Mana

It is here that Rabindranath Tagore translated "Jana Gana Mana" from Bengali to English . The music was also provided here and the National Anthem, which had been written by Rabindranath Tagore as early in 1911 was recited at the annual session of the Indian National Congress at Calcutta. This took place on December 27 that year. But the practice was done at the Besant Theosophical College, Madanapalle, where Tagore was staying in February 1919 and trying the song to make sure that the tone and tune was set. The tune was composed here by Margaret Cousins, wife of educationist, Dr. James Henry Cousins. Dr. Cousins was the existing Principal of the Madanapalle College that was established by Dr. Annie Besant.

Economy of Madanapalle

The economy of Madanapalle mainly based on agriculture and the popular grown crops and vegetables here are tomato, mango, groundnut, tamarind and many others. The silk saris. In Madanapalle are very famous too and silk is grown here too. It is also the biggest tomato market in Asia and a major part of the southern states & a lot of northern states of India get tomatoes from here. It also has enormous reserves of granite, which are supplied to different parts of the country.

Madanapalle is one of the most connected towns by road and rail. It has three Bus terminals and state owned APSRTC buses operate here and go to different parts of the district, state and interstate - Bangalore (KA), Mysore, Bellary and Chennai (TN), Vellore. The Madanapalle Road Railway Station (MPL) is located right on the Dharmavarm - Pakala Branch line. Most trains stop here and access the major cities across the country.
